Liberty Global has committed to Net Zero targets across Scopes 1 and 2 by 2030, with a further plan to include Scope 3 in our commitment by mid-2022.
The Net Zero targets across Scope 1 and 2 mean we will eliminate the greenhouse gases we produce both directly and indirectly across our business. The announcement is part of Liberty Global’s continued commitment to enhancing sustainability and energy efficiency, with a focus on energy use, carbon emissions and management of electronic waste.
Our Net Zero ambitions build on our previous commitment to Science Based Targets, which provide a clear path to reducing emissions in line with the goals of the Paris Agreement – limiting global warming to well below 2°C above pre-industrial levels and pursuing efforts to limit warming to 1.5°C.
Transforming our business
The reduction in emissions comes through multiple initiatives spanning the entire business – from electrifying our fleet of vehicles for employees and engineers, to creating sustainable methods of powering and cooling our network. Over 90% of our emissions are indirect and come from the electricity we buy and use in our offices, shops and technical sites. Our goal is to get 100% of our electricity from sustainable sources. We’re also using new ways of cooling our technical sites with innovative techniques such as phase-changing material.
Sustainability leadership
Over the last year, our sustainability efforts have positioned us as a leader within our industry. Liberty Global is a founding member of the European Green Digital Coalition, announced earlier this year. We were among the first 500 companies worldwide to develop approved Science-based Targets in alignment with the 2015 Paris Agreement, and our environmental initiatives and focus on carbon emissions garnered an A- score by the Carbon Disclosure Project (CDP).
We are also in the final stages of our analysis and alignment planning to include Scope 3 within our Net Zero commitment, removing indirect emissions produced across our entire value chain. We expect to announce this ambition in mid-2022.
