As the world unites to tackle climate change, we are committed to ensuring that our business continues to minimise its environmental footprint. Across our company, we are committed to reducing our environmental footprint and laying our pathway towards net zero.

We are focused on smart energy – innovating to save energy, ensuring that the energy we use comes from renewable sources and that the products we provide for our customers are as efficient as possible. We are also improving the energy efficiency of our fixed and mobile networks so that faster and better connectivity does not translate to higher emissions.

Net Zero Ambitions

We are working to reduce our carbon footprint in line with the ambitions of the Paris Agreement to limit global warming to no more than 1.5˚C.

In 2021 we announced Scope 1 & 2 net zero ambition for 2030 and are now focused on realizing annual emissions reductions across our business to achieve our Science Based Targets initiative (SBTi) approved Scope 1 & 2 50% reduction by 2030 target, against a 2019 baseline.

Our Scope 3 modelling is in process and will be based on the principles of science-based net zero targets.

OUR APPROACH

Scope 1

TRANSFORMING OUR BUSINESS

We’re eliminating carbon emissions from our business in a range of different ways – from “electrifying” our fleet of vehicles for employees and engineers, to sustainable methods of powering our emergency generators and cooling our data centres.

Scope 2

HOW WE BUY OUR ENERGY

We track the electricity we buy and use in our offices, shops and technical sites and our goal is to get 100% of our electricity from renewable sources. We’re also using new ways of managing electricity consumption and cooling our technical sites with innovative techniques such as the deployment of Artificial Intelligence and ‘free air cooling’.

Scope 3

SUPPLIERS AND CONSUMERS

We are finalizing plans to include Scope 3 within our Net Zero commitment, removing indirect emissions across our entire value chain. We’re asking suppliers to comply with our key sustainability principles and collaborating with them to help make their businesses more sustainable. We continue to enhance the sustainability of our products to minimize waste and energy consumption.

PRODUCT SUSTAINABILITY

Continuous improvement is our ethos and approach to product sustainability. Incremental changes to our existing products, optimizing packaging to remove unnecessary plastic and shifting to recycled and recyclable materials.

In 2020 we introduced our improved set top box, delivering a world-class viewing experience while reducing energy consumption and the use of plastics – the Apollo box.

Designed by Liberty Global and manufactured by CommScope, the compact, multi-faceted 4K Mini TV Box combines a high-quality customer experience and rich choice of content with extremely low power consumption and a casing that’s almost entirely made from recycled plastic.

PRODUCT SUSTAINABILITY IN NUMBERS

In 2022 alone, the improvements made to the box and its transportation have allowed us to make positive impact on our environmental footprint:

63%

lower power consumption than its predecessor

100

metric tonnes of CO2 saved in The Netherlands alone

135

tonnes of virgin plastic saved

7

tonnes of polythene bags saved in packaging our products for shipping
