Finance Graduate, UK

My journey

I started the graduate programme in September 2022 in Amsterdam. It was a whole new journey with fantastic opportunities – I worked in Procurement, gaining skills in finance, negotiation and stakeholder management. During the programme, I completed my CIMA, which Liberty Global supported through providing payment for the exams and dedicated study days.

In my second year of the programme, I moved back to the UK and worked in Capital Allocation and Business Control at one of Liberty’s energy ventures, Egg. Here, I picked up invaluable experience in a completely different environment, focusing predominantly on Finance in a start-up, entrepreneurial-setting, which gave me a lot of responsibility.

I’m also on the R.E.A.C.H. committee, one of our Employee Resource Groups, which is dedicated to race, ethnicity and cultural harmony. R.E.A.C.H is a safe space for discussion and education that is inclusive, informative and inspiring.  Being part of the committee has provided me with the opportunity to support in getting the facilities in place for multi-faith rooms and organising events, such as the Ramadan Fast challenge which raises money for the less fortunate.

I’m heading into my final year of the programme, where I will be in the Systems Run Innovate Team, supporting on everyting related to tech, commercial and finance. It’s great to know there are many new opportunities and exciting initiatives that are happening across the company, and the programme has allowed me to learn about different segments of the business.

Jaabir outside working hours

JP! That’s what I’m known as to my friends and family. Outside of working hours, I tend to keep myself busy. Being a huge football fan, I follow Liverpool Football club home, away, and across Europe. This provides me with also fulfilling my other hobby of traveling. Before I started working full time, I used to also represent the LFC foundation raising money for the schools, hospitals, and foodbanks of Liverpool. I’m also very active, I spend time in the gym at least 5 days a week and will pick up outdoor sports such as tennis and basketball in the summer.

Family is the most important thing to me. We love going to the movies, theme parks, and out to eat quite often. Islam shapes a huge part of my life. Being a Muslim helps me stay close to God and be a better person every day. Liberty Global does provide assistance for us to pray when we need to during work hours with a multi-faith room. My manager has also been very understanding about this allowing me to leave at certain times for prayers.

What is #LifeatLiberty like?

It’s Lit! For those that aren’t familiar with the slang term, it means exciting. The people, the goals, and the vision all make #Lifeatliberty Lit!

The word that best describes my team is… wholesome.

You’re truly part of Liberty Global, when… you see the many opportunities that the company provides and grasp at least one of them.
