Our global leadership development program, Lead Forward, which we kicked off in 2014, aims to ensure that our senior leaders are united and ready to take on the challenges of our ever-changing industry.
Aligning our leadership around the same goals
Lead Forward is a major investment in Liberty Global’s future and a giant leap forward for our People Agenda. Launched in 2013, the People Agenda is our company wide people strategy for developing and investing in our 38,000 employees, focusing on four key areas: Talent, Leadership, Culture and Reward.
Our ambition with Lead Forward is to develop the most effective and aligned leadership in our industry.
The comprehensive program helps participants enhance their personal leadership effectiveness and engages them in an ongoing dialog around the issues that are critical to our future success: innovation, customer centricity and talent. It also provides our senior leaders with a shared understanding of our strategy, business model and leadership expectations to make sure that they work together towards common goals and inspire others to do the same.
IMPRESSIONS OF OUR
LEAD FORWARD PROGRAM
Kick-off in Denver
The program kicked off with an inspiring event in Denver, US in March 2014, gathering more than 300 senior leaders from across the Liberty Global family. The two-day event included many presentations and interactive sessions, giving participants food for thought on the most important issues underpinning our business, such as our company strategy, product roadmap and financial model. The welcome dinner at the Cable Center gave our leaders a great opportunity to network with peers from other markets.

High-impact customized learning
After the kick off, the participants split up in smaller groups to attend a high-impact program at the IMD business school in Lausanne, Switzerland. Between May and October 2014, IMD hosted six cohorts of about 50 Lead Forward participants each. The specially customized five-day program included work sessions, individual coaching and thought-provoking presentations to help our leaders delve into emerging thinking and critical leadership skills.
A key item on the agenda at IMD was a sophisticated and bespoke simulation game, designed to mirror Liberty Global’s own business. Competing in small groups, the game challenged our leaders to weigh complex information and make decisions on real-life issues such as pricing, advertising spend and network investments.
Lead Forward has been a great success as evidenced by the overwhelmingly positive feedback.
Participants gave the program an average rating of 4.8 out of 5, citing its role in aligning our leadership, creating a deeper understanding of the business and improving individual leadership capabilities. We are confident that Lead Forward will have a profound impact on the entire organization, as leaders share their valuable lessons with their teams and start acting upon them.
Going forward, we will continue the IMD program for new senior leaders to make sure everyone gets the same experience.
WHY WE INVEST IN
SENIOR LEADERSHIP DEVELOPMENT
In 2015, we are also launching our fourth class of Fast Forward, our flagship program for developing emerging leaders, bringing together 54 high-potentials from across the organization. Inspired by Lead Forward, the revamped program will put more emphasis on individual leadership needs through 360-degree assessments and one-on-one coaching. In combination, the two programs ensure that we have the best leadership in the industry – today and tomorrow.
