The searing summer heat in London provided a perhaps appropriate but unwelcome backdrop to the 2026 edition of London Climate Action Week (LCAW). As someone who champions our climate ambitions at Liberty Global, LCAW is emerging as one of the calendar’s most important moments to engage with our partners and peers to listen and learn.
While the rising temperatures saw some outdoor events rescheduled indoors or in a small number of cases, cancelled altogether, what transpired was LCAW’s biggest event to date. More than 75,000 attendees are reported to have flocked to London, and the buzz was tangible. Conversations and events felt more international. Maybe it was the heat filtering in, but people also seemed more impatient for action.
One of the most exciting aspects of working at Liberty Global is the partnerships we create and showing how it is possible for organisations like ours to help drive positive climate impact – through innovation, investment and collaboration.
Take one of our panel events during LCAW co-hosted with Formula E, the elite purpose-driven motorsport that leverages the global shift toward electric mobility. The business model is powered by our investment with the promise of long-term growth. Free-to-air broadcasts are prioritised over massive media rights, with urban street races to engage a younger, eco-conscious audience.
There are real world implications that take the learnings from the track onto the road for the rest of us. For major automotive manufacturers such as Jaguar, the series functions as a high-exposure testbed for investment in electrification. At a packed series of panel sessions in Westminster, Formula E CEO, Jeff Dodds told our audience: “There is no compromise between performance and purpose”.
His comments come with a new era of motorsport on the horizon, as we get set for the arrival of the all-new GEN4 series of cars for the 2026/27 ABB FIA Formula E World Championship season. The GEN4 represents the pinnacle of sustainable motorsport design, reinforcing Formula E’s commitment to the environment. The car leans into recyclable or reusable construction and is built with a minimum 20% recycled content – double the GEN3 Evo. Formula E’s investment in high-performance technology is already making its ways from the racetrack to the everyday road.
We also heard from Liberty Global companies egg Group, Believ and AtlasEdge, who are respectively bringing the green transition to life in everyday ways for renewable energy, electric vehicle charging and environmentally responsible data centers.
Ilesh Patel, CEO of egg Group highlighted how Liberty Global’s clean energy infrastructure business recently signed the UK’s largest onshore wind Power Purchasing Agreement (PPA) with Amazon. The agreement for the Chirmorie Wind Farm in South Ayrshire, Scotland will see Amazon purchase 90MW of wind energy from egg Power, underlining the growing demand for renewables as part of the UK’s energy mix. It is the second long-term PPA egg has signed this year after Virgin Media O2 agreed to take power from the Grange solar farm in Suffolk.
Data centers require a continuous supply of energy to power tens of thousands of servers and their cooling systems and Liberty Global is playing its part to drive a sustainable shift. Atlas Edge, jointly owned by Liberty Global and Digital Bridge is committed to building and operating data centres that support digital growth while reducing environmental impact. Susan Ashton, VP of Governance, Risk & Compliance outlined how as demand for digital infrastructure grows, Atlas Edge is investing in scalable, efficient sites designed for long-term performance. The business is working towards climate neutral operations by 2030, supported by continuous improvement across sites and operations.
Finally, Charlie Allen from our EV charging infrastructure company, Believ, outlined its mission to help deliver cleaner air for all through accelerating the transition to cleaner mobility. Believ have over two thousand electric vehicle charging points across the UK – with their network powered by 100% renewable energy.
Powering a greener future is an important part of our sustainability strategy which pivots around three pillars of People, Planet and Progress. For us, there is an inextricable link between all three and it’s a strategy that we are embedding across our subsidiaries. LCAW for me served as a reminder not only of the importance of the investments we make and the value we build, but in our collaboration to create a unifying impact for a sustainable future – that proves greater than the sum of our parts.
